Hiking Trails on Rab: Where to Walk Without a Car
Published 2026-05-06 · 7 min read
Kalifront, Frkanj, Kamenjak and the walks around Lopar — where to start, what to bring, when to stop in the shade.
Rab is small enough that you can pick your direction freely, and varied enough that every day shows you a different version of the island. Pine forest one morning, karst ridge the next, a beach in a cove you have to walk down to. You don't need a car — every main trail starts from Rab town, Banjol or Lopar.
## Three zones, three characters
Kalifront is the gentlest option. Dense Aleppo pine cover keeps you in shade even in July, the paths are flat and marked with red-and-white CMTK signs, and trails branch off the road from Rab town toward Suha Punta. Good for your first day, a morning walk, or whenever you're with family. The ground is softer than elsewhere on the island, which your knees will appreciate.
Frkanj is the next step up. The peninsula between Rab town and the Kampor bay gives you a sea view most of the time without serious climbs. Easy to moderate. Suits couples, a late-afternoon walk that ends with a swim, or an early-evening loop when the light is at its best.
Kamenjak is the hard one, and the only trail that really needs proper shoes. A karst spine on the north-east of the island — no forest, no water along the way, but the view stretches to Velebit on one side and across the Kvarner archipelago on the other. Do not go in midday heat and do not go in sandals; the karst cuts through thin soles like they're paper.
## The walks around Lopar
If you're staying in Lopar you don't need to drive anywhere. Tiha plaža is 15 minutes from the centre. San Marino bay and the coast above it are half an hour. The cliffs over Sahara beach are easy walking, but stay back from the edge with kids. You can combine all of this into one half-day loop with a swim in the middle.
## What to bring
Water — at least 1.5 L per person. Drinking fountains are rare and not always running. A sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses. Closed shoes or proper trainers with a firm sole; sandals only work on the forest paths. In summer start early, ideally before 9 AM, because the karst sections get no shade until late afternoon. Add some fruit, salty snacks and a small blister kit. Phone charged, offline map downloaded — signal drops in Kalifront more than once.
## Best months
April, May, June — mild temperatures, full vegetation, long days. September and the first half of October — the quietest tourist window and the sea is still warm enough for a reward swim at the end. July and August work too but only early morning or after 5 PM. Winter is quiet and beautiful, but watch the bura — the wind that comes off the eastern side of the island slows you down more than you expect.
The markings are mostly reliable, but some segments have faded or been overgrown by macchia. If you haven't seen a marker for five minutes, walk back to the last one rather than improvise through the brush. Rab is too small to truly get lost on, but twisting an ankle on an unmarked shortcut is very real.
