Cycling Rab: Routes, Gravel and Ferry-Bike Combos

Published 2026-05-07 · 7 min read

The Lopar loop, Kalifront's forest gravel and the coast toward Mundanije — where it's enjoyable, where it's crowded, when to start.

Rab isn't a flat island, but you don't need to be a racer to enjoy it on a bike. Three or four routes cover most of what's worth seeing, and an e-bike is rentable in just about every larger settlement — which works wonders on the climbs. ## Three routes worth doing The Lopar loop is the gentlest. Paved, relatively flat, around 20 to 25 km depending on how many detours you make. You can ride it with kids, stop at every beach on the peninsula, pull over for a swim and continue. Best time is early morning — in peak season the afternoon brings rental cars and transit buses that narrow the lane. Kalifront is for those who like gravel and forest. Forest tracks run through dense pine, cross the main road to Suha Punta twice, and give you a forest-canopy light that's especially beautiful in the morning. The surface suits gravel or MTB bikes; a road bike struggles. Less traffic than the coastal road in July and August, which is the main reason to choose it in summer. The coastal road from Rab town toward Mundanije and on to Banjol is paved, scenic, but narrow in places. Watch for buses and rental cars. Ride early or late afternoon; avoid 11 AM to 3 PM when traffic is densest. If you want more, extend toward Barbat. ## Ferry plus bike A combo that's often forgotten: take the ferry off the island with your bike. The Rab ferry runs to Stinica/Jablanac on the mainland, giving you access to climbs into the Velebit range for anyone who wants a day in the mountains. Check the seasonal schedule before you go — it varies summer/winter and the boats can be hours apart. Bikes are accepted, but space isn't unlimited in peak season; arrive 30 minutes early. ## Rentals and gear E-bikes are rented in Rab town, Lopar and Suha Punta. The shops rotate season to season, so the safer move is asking your host or checking the current Rabinsider listing rather than chasing a name you heard about. Helmets aren't legally required for adults in Croatia, but on the road with buses you should genuinely wear one. Bring water, a small repair kit (tyre lever, patch, pump), a spare inner tube. Service is scarce outside Rab town — if something breaks in Lopar your nearest real fix is the ride back. Phone charged, offline map downloaded. ## Best months Late April to late June, then September into mid-October. In July and August ride before 10 AM or after 6 PM — otherwise you'll roast and meet traffic. The bura can pick up in spring and autumn; that's not a reason to cancel a day, but it means you start into the wind and finish with it at your back, not the other way around.
